Emergency Medical Elective
Course Description - SURG 7580
During the Emergency Medicine rotation, each student will spend two weeks at the University of Utah Hospital and two weeks at IMC Hospital. They will expose the student to the diagnostic, therapeutic, and procedural skills required for the management of acute illness and injury. The learning experience will center around the student's involvement in the care of patients in the Emergency Department. The student will function at the level of an intern and will be involved in all aspects of emergency care, including the performance of all necessary procedures. From the patient's initial presentation through diagnosis and development of the treatment plan, it is expected that the student will gain knowledge and confidence in his or her clinical skills. Students will be expected to present the patient to an attending physician or senior resident with a differential diagnosis of the patient's complaint and to formulate a plan of therapy for each patient. All patients will be concurrently managed by the Emergency Department attending or senior resident, who will provide immediate feedback, teaching, and support. Each student will spend two weeks at the University of Utah Hospital and two weeks at IMC Hospital.
