CARDIOLOGY FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENT

The University of Utah Cardiology Fellowship Training Programs focus on training leaders in Cardiovascular Disease and it's subspecialties who are committed to excellence in academic medicine. The training should not only provide the fundamental skills necessary to enable the physician to be come an exemplary clinician, scientist, and teacher, but it should instill the utmost respect for the patient, stressing the critical importance of a compassionate and caring doctor-patient relationship. The training programs emphasize the development of particular skills that will foster a life-long enthusiasm for clinical and/or basic science research that will lead to improved understanding of disease processes, and ultimately, toward advancements in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of patients with cardiovascular disease.

Clinical Training

Clinical training for trainees in the Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship is in general cardiology with additional training in the cardiovascular subspecialties.

Trainees may elect to specialize in invasive/interventional cardiology, noninvasive cardiology, clinical cardiac electrophysiology, heart failure/transplantation, preventive cardiology and critical care.

Research Training

A broad choice of research is available, from purely clinical research to the most fundamental basic research. Our strongest clinical research areas include electrophysiology, heart transplantation, congestive heart failure management, preventive cardiology, and thrombolytic strategies. Basic laboratory research training is available in myocyte calcium and pH regulation, excitation-contraction coupling, biochemistry of the vascular endothelium, receptor biochemistry, human genetics and molecular biology.

Didactic Training

Extensive didactic teaching, including some required university courses, is provided. Training in public speaking, manuscript writing and grant preparation is emphasized as preparation for academic pursuits.
