January is Thyroid Awareness Month

The American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists have designated January as "Thyroid Awareness Month".

A recent Deseret News article "Cold, tired, wight gain, hair loss? Your thyroid may be cuprit" by Brooke Brown, stresses the importance of increasing awareness about throid disease, but offers differing viewpoints about the best way to test for the disease.

Dr. E. Dale Abel

Endocrinologist E. Dale Abel, MD, PhD, whose interview begins halfway through the article, agrees with the importance of increasing public awareness of all thyroid problems, but believes, along with the Endocrine Society and the American Thyroid Association, that the standard TSH test is sufficient for an initial screening for thyroid disease.
