The University of Utah's Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine is approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) to provide fellowship training in both pulmonary disease and critical care medicine.
The Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program provides a unique three-year experience in clinical and basic pulmonary and critical care medicine, which fulfills requirements of the American Board of Internal Medicine to take the certifying examination in these subspecialties.
Our Fellowship Program provides training to prepare physicians to pursue careers as academicians or clinical scholars. The goals of our Program are to offer a diverse training experience geared toward the desire of each individual fellow. Our Program opportunities include strong clinical training with an eye toward developing the comprehensive cognitive and procedural skills that are fundamental to Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine. In addition, in-depth training in applied and basic research to include cellular and molecular biology, genetics and physiology are offered. Alternatively, clinical research in asthma, critical care, sleep medicine, pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary fibrosis, and COPD is ongoing. Advanced training for fellows committed to an academic career is supported by an NIH training grant. Instruction in methods that will enable fellows to develop the skills needed to sustain independent research programs and to serve as accomplished clinician-educators is strongly supported.
Basic Curriculum Clinical and Research Components:
The first 18 months of training in the program is clinical, while the remaining 18 months is spent on research, either basic or clinical. The combined program will qualify fellows to certify in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, as per the ABIM requirements.
Participant's supervisory and patient care responsibilities:
As Pulmonary and Critical Care Residents acquire the knowledge and judgment that accrue with experience, they will be allowed the privilege of increased authority for patient care. An attending pulmonary physician ensures the quality of patient care, patient safety, and the success of an educational experience for the trainee.
