Atherogenesis and Coronary Artery Disease
Dr. Jeffrey Anderson has carried out numerous trials of new therapeutic measures in acute coronary occlusion (e.g. thrombolytic agents) and continues an active interest in these problems. Drs. Brent Muhlestein and Brian Whisenant (LDS Hospital), William Barry (University Hospital) perform clinical studies on the arteriosclerosis that follows injury to or in formation in the coronary arteries. This includes studies both of experimental injury and of the accelerated form of coronary atherosclerosis that occurs after cardiac transplantation. Drs. Stephen Prescott and Thomas McIntyre study the earliest phases of atherogenesis in experiments designed to understand how deposition of cholesterol occurs, the basis for the proliferation of cells in the vascular wall, and novel mechanisms by which these processes might be influenced.
