Gastric Bypass Study

Grant #: R01 DK55006
Dates:  9/1/00 - 7/31/11

TITLE: Morbidity and Mortality Related to Gastric Bypass Surgery

The major goal of this project is to obtain cause of death on a series of 8000 persons who have had gastric bypass surgery from 1980 to present.  The effectiveness of the surgery to reduce mortality will be estimated by comparing mortality rates to Utah and U.S. population rates.  On a subset of these subjects who reside in Salt Lake City, morbidity will be obtained from physician and hospital records and compared to Utah population rates and to a series of morbidly obese subjects who have not had gastric bypass surgery.
