Arterial Blood Gases

Pulmonary LaboratoryArterial blood gas analysis (ABG) is most often performed to evaluate respiratory diseases and other conditions that affect the lungs as well as to evaluate the effectiveness of oxygen therapy. An ABG is also indicated when an acid-base imbalance due to a metabolic or renal disease is suspected. Often, co-oximetry and electrolyte measurements are included in an ABG giving a more in-depth picture of the patient’s condition to the health care team.

The Arterial Blood Gas Lab serves both inpatient units and the outpatient clinics within the hospital and is involved in research studies with many departments throughout campus. Samples are obtained through arterial puncture or delivered to our lab when the patient has an arterial catheter, and are immediately analyzed in order to maintain specimen integrity. We provide accurate results in a timely manner to facilitate proper and efficient care.
