GENERAL SURGERY PROGRAM APPLICATION CHECKLIST
APPLICATIONS ARE ONLY ACCEPTED THROUGH ERAS The following items are needed for a Complete General Surgery Program Application:
1. Standard ERAS Application- Association of American Medical Colleges. Complete this web-based application through your Dean's office.
2. Letters- At least three letters from general surgeons who know you well and are willing to describe the clinical strengths that you have displayed on their services. Letters from non-surgeons are useful but not as valuable in determining your suitability as a house officer. Past performance and clinical success are the best predictors of future success in our program. Therefore, clinicians who have observed you closely as an acting intern can provide the best letters.
3. Chairperson Letter- A letter from the Chairperson of the Department of Surgery at your institution is desirable, but not required. If your Chairperson does not know you, then it is not necessary to obtain a letter from him or her.
4. Dean's letter- A letter from the Dean with an official school transcript.
5. USMLE/ECFAS Scores
6. Short Personal Statement- This demonstrates your ability to use the language and organize your thoughts in a succinct fashion.
You will not be considered for an interview until your application is complete. This will not be until after the Dean's Letters have been released on November 1, assuming all the other information has been submitted. Application review is done by a screening and scoring process and only the highest scoring candidates will be offered an interview.
