Welcome to the Department of Surgery
at the University of Utah

At this site you will find information about our faculty, the clinical programs they direct, our educational programs, and our research effort. I hope you will use this site to become more familiar with us and our activities.

This is an exciting time for our department. We are engaged in an unprecedented expansion of our clinical facilities, including a new expansion to the University Hospital (the West Pavilion) and a doubling of the size of the Huntsman Cancer Hospital. We have recently completed construction of a new research tower, an educational building for our students, and other clinical facilities. The expansion of our physical plant has brought opportunities for development of new clinical programs and recruitment of additional faculty in all divisions. Our research expertise focuses on gene discovery using the unique resource of the Utah population database, as well as molecular medicine, bioengineering, and cancer. You will find, in our department, cutting edge clinical programs, a commitment to excellence, and superb educational and research opportunities.

As a relative newcomer to Utah, I have been struck by the unusual combination of a world-class university and health sciences center located in a highly attractive physical environment. This, combined with the warm, collegial relationships among our faculty, residents, students, and staff make this a truly special department.
